Confusion over council polls in Anambra

There is confusion now over the conduct of local government elections in Anambra State as some groups and stakeholders are singing discordant tunes over the propriety of the polls at this time.
The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAD), and Comrade Osita Obi-led Movement for Credible Elections are championing for the elections while a group of aspiring lawmakers in the state are calling for the elections to be shifted.
Assistant Chairman of IPAD, Prince Isaac Onuka and Secretary, Comrade Peter Okala, had said recently that the various political parties operating in the state were prepared for the elections and urged the governor not to disappoint them by delaying the exercise.

They argued that there was no justification to revert to the use of caretaker committees for the local governments when the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) can be funded to conduct the polls.
However, another pressure group, House of Assembly Aspirants Association of Nigeria (HAAN), faulted the call by IPAD, saying that the campaign for the Senate in the Anambra Central by all political parties will intensify by January.
HAAN therefore posited that combining this with the local government elections would heat up the polity in the state.
The chairman of the group, Hon. Nduka Alor and another member, Hon. Nnaemeka Ezeaku (Dunukofia Constituency) appealed to the Governor to postpone the council polls to enable some of them who have interest in

 the election participate fully.
“We are appealing to His Excellency to suspend the issue of Local Government elections for now. He should appoint a caretaker committee that will pilot the affairs of the local governments pending when the senatorial election will be over.
“We really want to concentrate in this (senatorial) election to en¬sure that PDP did not manipulate the electoral process anymore.
“The governor has made a lot of sacrifices for the people in all ram¬ifications that the only thing he needs now is our collective prayers and as well, watch our back against the evil doers who want to pull him down by all means.
“This is the only opportunity that APGA has to cruise to victory after the day rubbery of PDP and their cohorts in the last general election which the appeal court upturned,” they said.
