Stand up to your responsibility, Kalu charges media practitioners

Former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has charged media practitioners to be alive to their responsibilities by ensuring a just and equitable society.
Kalu, who is the publisher of The Sun titles and founder of the New Telegraph newspapers, gave the charge at the presentation of ‘Outstanding Journalism Promoter Award’ to him by Media Gate Communications during the 2015 Nigerian Icons Merit Awards (NIMA) ceremony.
Represented by the Group General Manager of Sun Heaven Hotels and Resort, Dr. Michael Pinder, the former governor urged the media not to fail in its task of being ‘the voice of the voiceless’ by advocating good governance through objective journalism.
“Permit me to use this golden opportunity to call on the media to stand up to its responsibility of promoting a just and equitable society. Let us see ourselves as the voice of the voiceless in advocating good governance through objective journalism. The Nigerian project should be embraced by discharging our duties and responsibilities with a high level of professionalism and integrity,” Kalu said.
He commended organisers of the annual awards, saying it would spur him to do more and, also, motivate his media establishments “to further contribute to the society through balanced, objective and credible reporting.
“We would also continue to invest in the media industry and other sectors of the economy in order to create more job opportunities for Nigerians,” he added.
Pinder described the award as another testimony of Kalu’s efforts and as a new dawn in the history of journalism in Nigeria looking at the assemblage of media stakeholders who graced the occasion.
