The health volunteer workers from the various communities in Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra state have been commended for contributing immensely to the success of Maternal New born child health (MNCH) week in which their local government came out best out of the 21 local government in the state.
In a statement issued recently by a United nations children fund (UNICEF) consultant Dr Olufemi Adeyemi during an interactive forum with the health volunteer workers at the local government council headquarters, Ojoto, he said that the impact of the workers was felt noticeably by the way people participated during the last MNCH week. “People brought out their children in their numbers for immunization, many pregnant women have enrolled for Anti-natal. People equally came out to meet health workers for check-ups during the last heath week”, Dr OLufemi said.
“This local government recorded the highest number of participants in the state. Although volunteer workers are not being paid yet you people were happy to be part of a pregnant woman or her child’s story” ,he said.
Dr Olufemi further encouraged the volunteer workers who work hand in hand with the primary health care centres to continue their good works, adding that everybody is responsible for a pregnant woman not just only the husband.
“A pregnant woman is just like a calabash containing precious substance and should be cherished and nurtured. A broken calabash cannot retain the same quality even if is needed”
“It is a crime and unacceptable for a child to be born dead, or the woman die after child birth. When a woman dies after child birth you have not lost a woman but a whole nation. A dead child can be the destiny holder of a whole nation or country” Dr Olufemi emphasized.
Dr Olufemi told them to continue to encourage pregnant women to visit health facilities where they will be taught how to take care of their unborn children.
Moreover, Dr Anaeme Afamefuna a public health officer from the Anambra state ministry of health also showered his commendation and urged them to repeat the same feat during the next MNCH week coming up November/ December.
Earlier in her address, the UNICEF facilitator, Mrs George Ileka (JP) said that Unicef was proud of the volunteer workers.
“UNICEf is proud of Idemili south VW. The megaphones and camera given to you people was not in vain, she said.
Ileka said that some children have born with different ailments or handicaps in the hands of quacks or local women who assist pregnant women to give birth but UNICEF is doing their best through the help of volunteer workers and PHC to eradicate such man made ailments.
