The Obsession with Weight Loss

88nweightloss.jpg-88nweightloss.jpgSome group of journalists at an event recently debated the growing trend of weight loss. Their focus revolved round a popular lady whose rapid weight loss is of concern not only to the journalists but also her family. The lady in question is said to have been very fit when she was on the big side.

But her sudden obsession to lose weight in order to look younger, according to these gentlemen of the press, made her look sickly. Even one grapevine source swore that an aide to her husband revealed to him that the anorexic look of the wife no longer appeals to him, so he is often looking for luscious apples elsewhere.

Not too long ago, I discussed this same problem. Everyone is on one diet or the other, trying to get the supposed attractive look of models. Slim waist and flat stomach are the major goals of the weight losers. To rock the red carpet with an hour-glass shape is paramount on their mind.

It would have been better if the goal behind the weight loss is for health reasons rather than materialism. But that is the sad case in our country. Girls starving themselves or buying herbs that promise magic weight reduction within a week of usage is more than a worrying trend. Whatever happened to being big, bold and beautiful? Moreover, Africans are naturally known for their thickness. The big bosom, the big backside, that’s what makes us Africans.

It is beginning to look like not many are proud to be Africans. Whatever my colleagues think of the rapid weight loss of the former first lady, she will not stop till she’s able to wear a monostrap ball gown and convince the paparazzi that she is ageing gracefully.
