PRAWA Extends Anti-Human Trafficking Campaign to Anambra Institutins, Riverine Communities


www.odogwublog.com reports that Women and youths in Mmiata Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra state, yesterday, threw emotions to the winds as they sob freely when a Non Governmental Organisation, Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA) Nigeria in Partnership with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP took the anti human trafficking campaign to their door steps.

The NGO, which is also partnering an Anambra based Civil Society Organisation, Integrated Anti-Human Trafficking and Community Development Initiative (INTERCOM-Africa) also visited Uli in Ihiala Council Area, Awgbu, Nibo and Mgbakwu communities in Orumba North, Awka South and Awka North Local Government Areas respectively to sensitise parents on the dangers of human trafficking.
NAPTIP in their recent report declared Anambra, Edo, Kano, Kaduna and Ogun States as the five top endemic states of human trafficking in Nigeria, hence the intervention of PRAWA in this 3rd phase of the anti human trafficking project that is being funded by the kingdom of the Netherlands.

In the one week programme, the team also visited Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, Federal Polytechnic, Oko and Paul University, Awka where students were advised to avoid being victims of human trafficking by ignoring anyone who promises to take them to Europe, help them get job and study abroad as it is only ploys to take them to slavery.
While speaking at Federal Polytechnic, Oko, the Programme Officer of PRAWA, Ms Chioma Anuna disclosed that youths in tertiary institutions are always vulnerable and at high risk of being trafficked adding that the campaign is to prevent them from jeopardising their future.
“Our main mandate is to rehabilitate the prisoners and ex-prisoners but in this phase of the project, we want to sensitise our youths on the dangers of human trafficking and drug abuse to prevent them from falling preys in the hand of traffickers” she said.
The Executive Director of  INTERCOM-Africa, Hope Okoye urged Nigerian students to be wary of traffickers who may pose as friends or relations but with ugly intension of trafficking them for sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, organ removal or for begging purposes in the streets of Europe.
She however urged the students to reject any offer of taking them to Europe for any reason as there are no gold in the streets of Europe.
The President Student’s Union Government of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Comrade  Federick Jefuome thanked the team for opening their eyes on the dangers of human trafficking.
