The root cause of former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi’s constant antagonism of his successor in office, Chief Willy Obianor, has been unearthed as rabid jealousy for the latter’s achievements.

The manner the governor has been handling state matters since March, 2014, when he took over the mantle of leadership from his predecessor, which is pointing to some radical changes, likely to make Obi’s achievement a child’s play, is said to be incensing him to no ends.

The chummy relationship that had existed between the two, since their years as directors of Fidelity Bank and which culminated in them exchanging places in the governorship office, has since encrusted, to a situation where both are now at daggers-drawn.

The revelation is coming against the backdrop of a press conference held last week by the governor the governor to debunk Obi’s claim and insistence that he left N75billion in cash, while handing over in 2014.

Disclosing the source of the angst on Wednesday, Principal Secretary to the Anambra Governor, Mr. Willie Nwokoye, said that Obi’s antagonistic attitude to his boss, bore the trademark of jealousy, given that new things had begun to happen in the state that would take it to greater height.

Alluding to the fact that nothing else could have precipitated such animosity, Nwokoye who spoke at the breakfast programme of Channels Television, said it was quite unfortunate that the former governor would adopt the posture of undermining the integrity of the governor in such a manner, simply because Obiano had shown greater propensity for possessing greater ideas on how to run government.

Obi and Obiano, when the going was good

Here is how he put it: “The animal in man gives inducement to jealousy. One and half years, a governor has come and defined the tangent of his developmental direction…In one and half years, someone has shown that he has the capacity, he has his own ideas on how to provide development and prosperity, tangible and intangible. When this is not available to some people, they begin to lay a claim to the progress of things by saying – ‘even though he is doing this, I left the money for him to do it. Let us begin to harass him with this falsehood so that he fails.’ Either is the reason.”

Nwokoye, who recalled personally drafting the letter that was personally signed by Obiano, inviting Obi to his one year anniversary in office, and how the former governor deliberately failed honour it and how the governor took a full page in a newspaper to congratulate him on his birthday, argued that because it was not in the place of his boss not to recognise the contribution of his predecessors, he had always paid tribute to Obi at every occasion.

Obi, however, is adamant that the governor is not only lying but is the uncharitable one in the entire affair, because there was nothing to struggle for adding that the fact that the governor went public with his disclaimer on the amount handed over to him, showed utmost bad faith.

Conveying his feelings through his spokesman, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, Obi said all the governor needed to do was contact him to make any clarification where he was confused on the handover note given to him.

Obienyem, who also spoke on the same programme, said the former governor, currently studying abroad, was greatly distressed by the information that the man he handed over was busy disparaging him back home.

Hear him: When I heard about this development, I put a call to my boss, who is in Cambridge undergoing leadership training. I told him what happened – the press conference, the denial and for once I saw him in a very bad mood. He said why? These people should have called me if there is anything confusing about my handover note and I would have explained to them.”

Maintaining that every claim made by the governor was true, he said it was either the governor was deliberately playing a mischievous card to rubbish his predecessor or he had scant understanding of the facts before him, which were all documented.
