Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Centre (HRCRC) Abakaliki, says it treated 142 cases of violence against women and children in Ebonyi, between January and August 2015.

Mr John Istifanus, HRCRC, Director of social organisation decried the increasing rate of rights’ violation.

“It is regrettable that families of these victims prefer to remain silent on the issue to avoid stigmatizations, and this development is seriously endangering societal value and norms,’’ he noted.

Istifanus said that the centre would embark on enlightenment programme to enable the public, especially the rural populace to understand the best way to access justice.

“We will embark on a pilot programme to enhance the rights of children as regard hard labour and violence, as well as create awareness of relevant laws.

“People should report this ugly trend to our centre and the law enforcement agencies for appropriate action as this will help protect women and children in our society,” Istifanus said.

He said that the centre had set up active groups in some communities and local government areas, adding that members of the groups were trained on various skills.

The director said that the trainees would be empowered to enable them reach out to people at the grassroots.
