www.odogwublog.com reports that the Anambra Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Sunday Ajayi, says ember month’s period is season of bountiful business harvest and celebration leading to increased vehicular movement and possible road crashes.
Ajayi told newsmen in Onitsha, yesterday, that available experience of the FRSC shows that the myth attributing accidents to demonic attacks on roads during ember months was untrue.
He, however, attributed most road crashes during the period to human errors and faults, which is a fall out of motorists not abiding faithfully to road traffic laws and regulations.
``As far as we are concerned in road safety there is nothing fatalistic about ember months, there is nothing spiritual about ember months, there is nothing evil about ember months.
``As matter of fact, ember months (period) is a period of harvest, good harvest; so there is nothing evil.
``The issue I will point out is that during the ember months a lot of activities come up.
``Like we have social events all over, so, people are on the road; we have equally increased economic activities, people trying to get one thing or the other done to have more money to enjoy themselves during this period.
``And another thing I will discover is that during this period, you see some vehicles that have been parked since January they want to bring it back to the road without actually allowing the vehicle to meet the minimal standard, this kind of thing can cause crash.
``A lot of people that are not trained and that are not licensed to drive because they have opportunity of buying a car, which is a blessing, they don’t want to train they just begin to drive.
``This kind things you see them more often during this period. So, when you look at all these things, you still see that they are man-made. So, there is nothing spiritual about it,’’ he said.
Ajayi noted that the FRSC was intensifying its ember months campaign patrols in Anambra to ensure that motorists abide by traffic laws and regulation as well as they being sober when riding.
The commander said that the FRSC would carry out lots of mobile court activities to put motorists in check this period; while it would embark on sensitization in motor parks and public places.
It had been the belief of most Nigerians that some demons display their ugly activities on roads by causing accidents during ember months period, which spans from Sept. to Dec. each year.
