Adeola receives nomination letter as The Sun Banker of the Year 2015

Yemi Adeola

GROUP Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Sterling Bank Plc., Mr. Yemi Adeola, has assured professionally managed organisations in Nigeria of his bank’s continued support despite the country’s tough operating environment.

Adeola, who gave the assurance while receiving his nomination letter as The Sun Banker of the Year 2015, from the Managing Director and Editor-In Chief of The Sun Publishing Limited, Mr. Eric Osagie, at the Marina head office in Lagos, said his bank would always do business with people and institutions that share its vision of professionalism, a distinctive feature that has propelled it to an enviable position in just 10 years.

The Sterling Bank boss, who said he read about his nomination in the newspaper, even though he knew nobody in The Sun, expressed satisfaction at the criteria cited for his choice, stressing it was an indication that the managers of The Sun must be professional in their assessment and choice of winners of their awards, which he said were quite different from other organisations that are pecuniary minded.

He said: “When I read in the newspaper about my nomination as the Banker of the Year, and I realised that I don’t know anybody in The Sun and that nobody contacted me, asking me to buy tables or to pay for one thing or the other, I then told myself that this must be a professionally managed organisation.”

Adeola, who said he often gets letters from various organisations nominating him for one award or the other and to which he politely declines, said he was impressed by the way The Sun has been conducting its affairs, which was the main reason he accepted his nomination for the award.

“The Sun is one of the seven newspapers I read everyday. We are pleased for your consideration and are happy you are doing it the way we do our things at Sterling Bank. I think this is an award I want to accept and we can only urge you to continue doing your work professionally because there is no way you will do your job well that you will not be recognized,” he said

According to him, professionally executed assignments can hardly be faulted, adding that The Sun is one organisation that he has seen doing its job in Nigeria very well by educating Nigerians professionally.

Adeola stated also that it was the high level of professionalism exhibited by the Sterling Bank management from inception that has seen it grow from 23rd position out of 25 banks in 2006 to be currently ranked among the first 10 banks in 2015 by all critical parameters.

Earlier in his remarks at the presentation, the Managing Director of The Sun Publishing Ltd, Mr. Osagie, said The Sun Awards are given to encourage and appreciate people in various sectors of the economy and the society, who are doing things right for the development of humanity and the economy as a whole.

He said Adeola was chosen for the revolution he has brought to a small bank, with total deposit of only N407million in 2006 to one that controls over three per cent of the banking industry market share in just 10 years.

He said The Sun Board of Editors that decides those to be honored is always mindful of the integrity of the award and will only nominate people who have done exceptionally well in their chosen careers without compromises.

He said: “Nigeria is a country in need of heroes and the only thing that can take us to the promise land is integrity.”
