The people of Urum Community in Awka North Local Government area of Anambra State have staged a protest at the Agu-Awka seat of power over the sale of over 800 plots of their communal land by the community’s traditional ruler, Igwe Benedict Nweke.
The protesters, who were driven to the state capital in several buses, displayed placards with inscriptions such as “We have no other source of sustenance”, “Igwe, don’t sell our common heritage”, “The future of our people is bleak with the sale of this land”, “We say no to land fraudsters”, etc.
In a statement made available to journalists, the people accused Igwe Nweke of using an iron fist on them and called on the Willie Obiano administration to strip him of the traditional title of Igwe Urum.
They also demanded a fulll investigation into the fraudulent acquisition of their Ochiokwa farmland by the State Government through the Chairman of Awka North Local Government Area, a private estate surveyor and valuer and Anambra State Coopeative Society with the connivance of Igwe Nweke.
The statement, which was signed by the President General of the town union, Mr. Dominic Umeadi, and the Patron, Prof. Ephraim Aniebona, among others, called on the State Government to nullify the land acquisition and recover the public finds allegedly paid to those involved.
The traditional ruler Igwe, Nweke, however, denied the allegations levelled against him by his subjects, saying in a phone conversation that he never sold any land belonging to his community. He was shocked he was attacked by Achalla people and rather than his subjects rise to his defence , they were busy being distracted by some disgruntled elements.
