President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Yakubu’s appointment was confirmed today, October 21, 2015, at an emergency Council of State meeting held by Buhari.

Here are 10 things you should know about the new INEC Chairman:

    He is a Professor of Political History and International Studies.

    He used to be the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

    He was appointed to the position by late President, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2007.

    He was the first academic to ever head the intervention agency.

    He was the Assistant Secretary of Finance and Administration at Nigeria’s National Conference Secretariat in 2014.

    He is an Expert in Guerrilla Warfare, Terrorism and Counter Terrorism.

    He is a lecturer at the Nigerian Defence Academy and teaches on War and Society in Pre-Colonial Africa.

    He was a member of the Oby Ezekwesili Educational Transformation Team.

    He was the first 1st class graduate of history from the North.

    His mother, Hajiya Amina, popularly known as Yelwa, died on January 17, 2014, after a brief illness.
