NEMA confirms 20 dead, 41 injured in explosions as 7-month baby battles for life

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), yesterday said that 15 persons lost their lives in the twin bomb blasts that rocked the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Friday night.
In a statement, the Senior Information Officer of the agency, Mr Sani Datti, confirmed seven persons dead in Nyanya, while 21 were injured. But in Kuje, 13 persons lost their lives and 20 were in¬jured.
According to him, the 41 injured persons were evacu¬ated to Nyanya and Asokoro General hospitals as well as National Hospital, Abuja.
Meanwhile, doctors at the hospital yesterday battled to save the life of a seventh month baby and thirteen others who sustained vari¬ous degrees of injury in the bomb blasts.
When newsmen vis¬ited the National Hospital, a highly agitated middle aged man who revealed that he lost his wife and grand¬mother to the bomb blast said the injured baby receiv¬ing treatment was his child. He was too confused to ex¬plain how the ugly event oc¬curred.
Meanwhile the spokes¬man of the hospital, Dr Tayo Haastrup confirmed the casualty figures to jour¬nalists. He also said the hos¬pital would be ready to hand over corpses to well identi¬fied relatives of the dead by Monday.
He said, “For now, nine bodies from both the Nyan¬ya and the Kuje bomb blasts have been deposited in our hospital. Also, 13 people who were brought alive with various degrees of in¬jury are also in our hospital.
“The good thing is that those who were injured are under stable health condi¬tion an
d are currently being treated. “By Monday or so, we will open the mortuary and call people to come and identify their loved ones,” Haastrup said.
