How to wake up with great skin every morning

Ever woken up in the morning and felt as if you had aged visibly overnight? Your face feels parched and your hair feels dry and frizzy?

We’ve put together a few sure-fire ways to help you ensure you wake up feeling fresh, flawless (and maybe even a bit younger) every single day.

Now we are not saying that your face will ‘Beyoncé’ flawless – though there is an Instagram filter for that – but factoring these into your routine will reduce the number of breakouts and boost the luminosity of your skin.

One: Start Your Routine Early

If you start cleansing your skin once you get home in the evening, rather than putting it off until a few minutes before you go to bed – and then forgetting to do it because you are just ‘”too tired” – then you are more likely to remove all the dirt, dust and toxins that have settled on your skin over the course of a day rather than allowing it to stay on your skin overnight.

Two: Hydrate Your Body

Before you dip into your pots and potions, one of the best ways for you to guarantee that you wake up with great skin is to drink a glass of water before bed. Technically you should be drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, as water is the healthiest and quickest way to hydrate your body at any time. But you know what, it’s very easy to forget.

It is much easier to keep a pint glass by your bed and knock back some H2O just before sleep.

Three: De-Stress

The mind and skin are intimately intertwined and if your psyche is not in a balanced condition, your skin will definitely show it. Stress has the peculiar ability to cause havoc on the skin. It can push your body to produce more hormones, which increases oil production in your skin, which in turn promotes inflammation and breakouts, so finding ways to flush the stress away is a vital step to waking up with great skin.

Nourishing products like the Aveda Stress Fix Composition Oil – £23 via Aveda – or the 100 Acres Lavender & Chamomile Body Lotion - £14.99 via 100 Acres – incorporate the sedative properties of lavender stress-fix “aide” to relax nervous tension and help you reduce the feelings of stress while leaving your skin feeling soft and supple before you turn in for the night.

If you are London based and need a quiet midday escape, then why not check yourself in the elusive Elemis Skin Lounge at Debenhams on Oxford Street. A little beacon of hope for the ladies  in the know, the Elemis Skin Lounge can help you to revive, boost and destress your skin in as little as 30 minutes with a speedy treatment menu that caters to all skin types

Four: Swap Your Cotton Pillowcases with Silk Ones

On paper, this might sound a bit extravagant, but sleeping with silk or satin pillows are a ‘great skin and hair’ sleeping aid. The tightly-woven fibres help to retain the moisture on your face, increasing overall hydration rather than soaking it up and stripping it out like some other fabrics can do.

Another bonus point for Silk Pillowcases - £35 via John Lewis - is that they are made from natural fibres and are less likely to irritate the skin and form those horrible sleep wrinkles etched all over your cheek when you wake up in the mornings

Five: Add Moisture into Your Surroundings

To help your moisturisers and serums work even better at night, you might want to think about sleeping close to a humidifier. Research shows that skin’s water-evaporation rate increases in the evening and with weather becoming harsher and dryer over the coming, boosting your moisture intake by adding a little moisture into the air around will do your skin a world of good.

Try adding a few drops of rosemary pure essential oil - £5.19 via Holland & Barrett – into the Heaven Fresh HF707 Humidifier - £134.99 via Argos – before you sleep in the evening? Not only will it boost your skin’s moisture retention, it will help ease any blocked nose or coughs you might catch in the nest few weeks.
