Group wants political office holders, wealthy individuals to create job opportunities for youths

www.odogwublog.com reports that a group, Opportunity is Given International (OGI), has appealed to political officer holders and wealthy individuals to create employment and empowerment opportunities for the teeming number of unemployed Nigerian youths.

The National Co-ordinator of OGI, Comrade Chimbo Obieze, made the appeal on Monday in Onitsha, Anambra during a press conference on unemployed youths in the country.

Obieze said that there should be a concerted effort towards employment in order to check a near breakdown of law and order which the present alarming rate of youths’ unemployment would cause the country, if not checked.

``I must confess to you that the issue of unemployment is fast becoming a great concern.

``And there is a lot of negative fallout from the present large army of unemployed youths roaming neighbourhoods and streets of the country.

``If the issue of massive unemployment among youths is not solved within few years; insecurity and violence might escalate to a level that would be overwhelming to security agencies,’’ he said.

Obieze noted that the government especially public office holders must channel all their energies and monies into economic expansion to create jobs.

``We must expand our existing industries and workplaces as well as strengthen our power supply system.

``Small and Medium enterprise is the option, which must countries are using but how can we use it when the basic – power – is not available.

``It is time the whole wealthy individuals and institutions find a way to contribute to develop the power sector; I quite agree that it is expensive.

``But we have to start somewhere, even as communities in the country engage in self help projects and before you know it, these projects are completed,’’ he said.

The co-ordinator urged the Federal Government to probe all constituency fund project in the country.

``The government had given huge monies to politicians to develop and invest in their areas and constituents in order to upgrade their status and create employment but these monies have been diverted.

``Or the funds are out rightly stolen and stack away in foreign countries that already have a buoyant economy,’’ he added.

It would be recalled that Opportunity is Given International (OGI) is an international NGO which provide youths with opportunities of employment and empowerment as well as liaising with governments to find ways to solve youth unemployment worldwide.
