CHELSEA BOARD ACCEPTS MOURINHO'S PLEA, BUT...

The controversial coach did issue a back me or sack me ultimatum after yet another shambolic display. The champions lost their last premier league match over the weekend against resurgent Southampton and the Portuguese coach has since apologized for the outcome of the match, with the club responding with a press release of their own, expressing their full support for the embattled coach who still faces criticism for his role in the Eva Carniero saga which has led to the physio leaving the club.

Although the club have publicly supported the widely traveled coach, it did not stop them from issuing a shape up or be shipped out ultimatum, meaning that the coach's future is still uncertain. Over the past few years, the club's owner Roman Abramovich has sacked nine managers, and there is no guarantee that Jose will not become the tenth in the list if the poor results continues. The club's owner may grow out of patience and eventually pull the plug.

It might have been forced by Mourinho himself appearing to give the club's board a back me or sack me ultimatum cum plea in his trademark rant after the shameful defeat to the saints at Stamford bridge.

His insecurity was highlighted as he insisted that he would not walk away from the club and essentially demanded a show of support from owner Roman Abramovich. He might have gotten the backing he wanted but not in the unconditional manner he expected. Read the club's full statement below.

"The club wants to make it clear that Jose continues to have our support. As Jose himself has said that the results have not been good enough, and the team's performance must improve. However, we believe that he is the right manager to turn around our season, and that he has the squad with which to do that."

From the above statement, the implication is clear; it's time for Jose to stop excuses and quit blaming the referees, his players and his own medical staff. He must get over his bitterness sorrounding the club's inactivity in the summer. The club resumes duty on October 17 after the international break. Chelsea will face Aston Villa who just like Chelsea has only eight points from as many games.
