Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday appointed Professor Mahmud Yakubu as new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Here are six things you should know about the newly appointed INEC boss:
1. Yakubu was a professor of Political History and International Studies before his appointment as the chairman of Nigeria’s electoral body, INEC.
2. He was an Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
3. He is an expert in guerrilla warfare, terrorism and counter-terrorism.
4. He was an Assistant Secretary, Finance and Administration, at the 2014 National Conference under the Jonathan led administration.
5. Professor Yakubu, is the first and only first class graduate of history from the North till date,who was on secondment from the Nigeria Defense Academy where he was a lecturer to the Federal Ministry of Education.
6. He was part of the Oby Ezekwesili Educational Transformation Team which was hailed by numerous Nigerians for their insightful recommendations for revolutionizing the education sector in Nigeria.
