Teachers give Akwa Ibom govt. 7 days ultimatum

                                                               
Teachers in Akwa Ibom State under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Akwa Ibom State wing have given the state government and the Committee on Pension Refund Set Up by the State Government, a 7-day Ultimatum to refund the seven and half percent contributory pension deducted from the salary of teachers in Akwa Ibom State.
The Union in a letter addressed to the state governor, His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel and signed by its chairman, Comrade Etim Ukpong and Secretary,  Comrade Mike Ene, noted that every, worker in the state had been paid their own 7 ½ % contributory fund except teachers.
In the letter referenced NUT/AKSW/MG03/VOL.5/65, also described the strategy where teachers are asked to write applications and visit Uyo, the state headquarters repeatedly, especially the office of the Head of Civil Service before they are paid and the situation where the refund is done in piecemeal as diversionary measures and bottlenecks applied by the committee on pension refund and demanded for the immediate and full refund of the amount to all the teachers in the state within 7 working days.
The union in its letter said the piecemeal and in most cases non-refund of the 7½%  contributory pensions has brought terrible embarrassment to the teachers and the union in the state warning that if the issue is not fully resolved it will become one of the reasons why teachers in the state will not resume by next academic session.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers views all the above measures as a ploy to punish our teachers as well as attempts by the committee not to pay and divert millions of naira deducted from teachers to private pockets.
