President Buhari's brother says Jonathan laid foundation for improved power supply

Increase in power supply has been attributed to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s efforts.
Former Minister of National Planning Commission, NPC, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman, said the huge investment by the Jonathan administration accounts for the noticeable improvement in the energy sector.
Sulaiman stated this at a workshop on Mechanism of Renewable Energy Utilisation and Development for Developing Countries in Changsha, China.
He said the nation’s power supply would greatly improve if incidences of insecurity in various parts of the country are curtailed, even as he acknowledged that a renewed sense of patriotism among Nigerians was partly responsible for the noticeable improvement.
“Yes, there is a renewed sense of patriotism among Nigerians, but more than anything, this development was as a result of the huge investments of the Jonathan administration, especially the commissioning of multiple power plants in its last days.
“What I am saying here is that this improvement was promised by the then president during our campaign. So, there is really nothing new,” he noted.
The erstwhile minister whose paper centered on ‘Renewable Energy in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospect’, noted that Nigeria is richly endowed in the energy sector, describing it as a leading economy in Africa and the 26th largest in the world.
Sulaiman noted that as a key actor within the globe, the country requires a quantum of energy to boost its GDP and propel the economy, stressing that there is need to invest in Nigeria’s energy sector.
He, however, declared that “no amount of investment in this sector would yield significant dividends if the atmosphere of insecurity and vandalism persist. Security situations characterised by the activities of vandals, saboteurs and terrorists remain major impediments to the realisation of a virile and viable energy sector.”
