AKWA Ibom Interest Movement (AIM), has condemned the brazen and dastardly act of invasion of the official quarters of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, by men of the Department of State Security (DSS) on the pretence of acting on intelligence report that the contents of the Lodge was a threat to national security.
The group, through a statement made available to newsmen by its Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Nkeneke Efo, described the action as illegal, adding that “we strongly believe that operatives of the DSS were acting the poorly written script of the President Buhari-led government through its head, Mr. Lawal Daura. That singular action is not only an assault on the sanctity of our hard earned democracy but an injurious blow on the integrity of the people of Akwa Ibom.”
“Never in the history of our democracy has the official residence of a sitting governor been raided; not even in the height of Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East when state governors were even alleged to be sponsors of the militant sect. Though not surprised that the DSS has descended into the murky water of politics and its being used by the presidency and its acolytes to hound perceived enemies, it was expected as we suspected that Mr. Daura's recall from retirement to head the agency was to serve only this purpose,” the statement added.
AIM concluded its position by saying that 'Akwa Ibom State is the victim of this obvious witch hunts shows how desperate and the length to which the presidency and the party at the centre will go to frustrate states controlled by the opposition.”
The group called on President Buhari to come to terms with the fact that Nigeria is no longer under a military dictatorship, but a democratic nation whose tenet of democracy must be respected.
