Governor Obiano Promises to Build 1000 Capacity Hostel for Truck Drivers as FRSC Flags-Off Ember Month in Anambra

 www.odogwublog.com reports that the Corps Marshal of  the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi Friday cautioned the road users on safety drive and to obey traffic laws during the ember month.
FRSC boss, Oyeyemi, who made the call at Bridge Head, Onitsha Anambra State during the 2015 National Ember Month Flag Off, described ‘ember months as a period of increase in vehicular density in Nigeria and beyond.

He noted that road carnages will drastically reduce if heavy truck drivers and other motorists drive with caution and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.

He emphasized that FRSC normally use the ember month to create awareness due to the increase in the vehicular density and movement of people and goods from one place to the other.

According to him, “We had relative improvement in road safety management especially in Anambra State and that is why we are seeking for cooperation from everyone to increase the level of awareness and our choice of Onitsha for this year’s flag off is due to the support we are getting from the state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano and for the fact that Onitsha is the base of all the luxury bus operators in Nigeria” he said.

In his remarks, the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano commended the FRSC for the choice of Anambra State for this year’s National Flagg off and for removing rickety vehicles parked along the roads and streets in Anambra State.

The governor informed that the State government has acquired a place in Nkpor where over 1,000 heavy duty tankers can pack over night, adding that the State government will soon begin the construction of 1000 hostel blocks in the same area for truck drivers.

He also pointed out that the state government has banned the sale of alcohols and other substances in motor packs around Anambra state to forestall the incidents of drivers, driving under the influence of alcohol.
Earlier in his remarks, the Zonal Chairman, Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Pius Ani acknowledged that they defiled the orders of the State government of not plying High ways on the day time because there is no truck terminal in the state where drivers can take rest in the night.
He also urged the Federal Government to construct the Enugu-Onitsha, Okigwe-Nnewi and Ihiala-Orlu roads, which he described as dead traps for motorists, especially the heavy duty drivers.
While the Zonal Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Hon. Alphonsus Chima commended the flag-off campaign which he said, will help drivers realize the need to take precautions on the high ways.
