ALL is not well with the environmental situation in Ayamelum, Anambra East and West local government areas following the recent upsurge in the water levels at various farm lands in the areas.

Investigations conducted, authoritatively revealed that farmers have started witnessing a sudden rise of water level in their farms. At Umuolum Rice farm, during a visit last week, there was noticeable rise in water level in the area. Also at Anaku-Omor Road, water level is on its way to the edge of the main road.

The situation at the moment has kept the farmers in a dilemma as some were not too sure of the situation, believing it to be natural tide while some believed it to be the forecasted danger.

However, the youths of the area have refused to understand the realities of our time as the government officials who were on sensitisation mission were harassed and ordered not to paste sensitisation posters at strategic areas. According to them in 2013, a similar government team came and pasted such posters and at the end, nothing happened which made them, sequel to their announcement, lose money following the removal of their cash crops at unmatured period which was detrimental to their means of survival and livelihood.

Meanwhile, State Government officials of Information Department have increased their tempo in terms of sensitisation despite the odds and threats they have encountered in the field knowing fully well that the water level is increasing rapidly contrary to the pace of a natural tide.

Residents of Ayamelum local government have, as a matter of seriousness, urgency and emergency been sensitised in clear terms to take proactive measures to spare themselves of the impending flood disaster as predicated by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

Therefore, since the veracity of the prediction, NIMET is now being vindicated, it is the onus of the opinion leaders in the area to double their efforts in alerting their people on the imminent danger since to be fore-warned is to be fore-armed.
