Police kill driver, conductor over N500 bribe

There was palpable fear and tension along the Jalingo-Wukari road in Taraba State when a team of policemen mounting a roadblock on the road allegedly shot a truck driver and his conductor to death because they refused to offer a N500 bribe when they were accosted on Sunday, August 23.

According to reports, the driver and his assistant were bringing goods into the state capital when they were stopped by the police who demanded to be 'settled' before they could be allowed to go but the driver reportedly refused, claiming he had exhausted his money by paying his way through every check point along the way.

This allegedly infuriated the policemen and in the heat of the argument, one of them fired some shots which hit the driver and his conductor, killing them instantly.

Other drivers who learnt of the incident, took to the streets the following day, blocking the roads and chanting solidarity songs, demanding the police authorities in the state to fish out the culprits who had immediately fled after the killings.
