Over 150 Residents to be sacked by Erosion in Anambra

www.odogwublog.com reports that over 150 students and residents of Anambra community are at risk of ecological problem threatening to pull-down the two storey buildings and bungalows they occupied should government fail to quickly intervene and to control the gully erosion they live at its mercy.

Speaking to our reporter, some of the residents of Umusiome quarters, and students of Government Technical College Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state lamented that they do not sleep with their two eyes closed.

They also claimed that they are sitting on the keg of time bomb awaiting possible explosion, because according to them, so many buildings have been swept away by the erosion, while the remnants are in deplorable condition.

According to one of them, Mr. Julius Okechukwu (landlord), the erosion began since they constructed a road through Aboh village without adding flood channels, as a result, the flood forcefully created channels for itself which later developed to big gully erosion.

“On my personal capacity, I have expended over 3.5million naira in order to control the erosion but now it has escalated beyond individual or community control. We have written severally to Office of the Governor; Ministry of Environment; Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters among other government MDAs. In fact the Chairman of Idemili North Local Government Council has visited the site himself, but yet to hear from him or any of the Ministries, Department and Agency (MDAs) written to initially”, he submitted.

Also speaking, another landlord in the area, Mr. Vincent Okafor lamented: “ I fenced my house, but you can see that this side and my gate has been pulled-down by erosion, I cannot sleep with my two eyes open due to fear of possible collapse. As you can see, no resident of this area come home with Okada let alone motor vehicle again, because the erosion has cut-off the only path to our entrance”.

On his part, Mr. Alfred Anyasie, a tenant of one of the houses about to collapse, cried to Governor Willie Obiano for quick intervention stressing that most of them have developed High blood pressure due to their loses to the ecological problem.

Confirming the erosion menace, the Member representing Idemili North Constituency at Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Francis Mmegbuanaeze said he has visited the place in company of the State Commissioner for Environment, Rt. Hon. Chinwe Nwaebili, assuring that it will be taken care of in due time because the state government was aware of the ecological problem.
