Over 13,000 traffic offenders arrested in Anambra

www.odogwublog.com reports that the Federal Road Safety Commission Anambra State Command says it has arrested 13, 688 road traffic offenders for various traffic offences ranging from speed violation to dangerous driving .

Speaking with newsmen after a meeting with unit commanders , heads of departments and special marshals , the sector commander Mr.Sunday Ajayi disclosed that between January and June 2015 Anambra has recorded 130 road traffic accidents  out of which he explained that 42 were fatal , 75 were serious while 13 were minors .

Explaining further Mr.Ajayi stated that amongst the fatal cases , 105 persons were killed and 436 persons were injured bringing the total to 541 casualties . Although he observed that the number of crashes decreased in 2015 by way of comparative analysis but emphasized also that the number of fatality was higher in 2015 adding that there are less accidents but more people died .

According to the sector commander accidents on the road are caused by speed violation and dangerous driving . He said that the commission has also identified some crash-prone areas in Anambra State to include Unizik junction Awka ,Government house junction Awka , immigration junction Awka , Unizik gate permanent site Awka . Others mentioned by the sector commander are Niger-bridge head Onitsha , Ngbuka gate Onitsha , Boromeo roundabout Onitsha and Upper iweka Onitsha . Eme court junction Nnewi , Igbariam junction Nteje axis , toll gate junction ,  Abba junction nteje axis as well as Okija junction in Ihiala .

Mr.Ajayi maintained that motorists should be careful when they approach these accident-prone areas in the state to avoid more crashes . He said also that the commission has re-strategized and will do a lot more to save lives especially as the ember months approach .

  He said that the Anambra command of the commission will intensify campaigns and  enforcements coupled with the commission's operation scorpion currently tackling menace of trailers and tankers , its operation no mercy also attending to motorcyclists and tricyclists in order to streamline their operations in the state while operation restore sanity on the roads currently tackles the issue of one-way driving in Onitsha and other parts of Anambra State as anyone caught in the act of one-way driving will pay a fine of 55,000 naira only describing route violation or one-way driving as dangerous driving .
