Obiano presents N300 Million waste management equipment to ASWAMA

www.odogwublog.com reports that Governor Willie Obiano has presented waste management and disposal equipment valued at about N300 million to the State Waste Management Agency, ASWAMA.
The Governor made the presentation at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.
Among the equipment which also commissioned by the Governor at the event were 2 Compactors, 4 Road Sweepers, 7 Swing Arms, 43 Swing Arm Buckets and One hundred and one 1.10 litre plastic waste bins.
The equipment which are under the first phase of distribution are for distribution to major cities of the state while subsequent ones will be for all the Local Government Areas of the state.
Presenting the equipment, Governor Obiano who said the issue of environmental sanitation is topmost in the agenda of his government, revealed that his government has hired 5 Waste Management Contractors who will be paid through sanitation levies, to undertake the evacuation and management of waste in the state.
He said in response to the flooding experienced in some parts of the state due to torrential rainfall of last month, the state government through the Ministry of Environment, is embarking on opening of all blocked drainages in the state, adding that every structure erected on flood plains and drainages will be pulled down.
According to the Governor, the equipment were purchased from an indigenous manufacturer as a way of encouraging local manufacturers in the state.
Governor Obiano urged Ndi Anambra to make proper use of the receptacles provided by the state government, warning that a task force has been set up to ensure strict compliance with sanitation laws while defaulters will be made to face the law.
Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, explained that Government in its renewed drive to ensure proper cleanliness in the state, has ordered for 1000 1.10 litre Galvanised Waste Bin to be distributed across the state.
In a vote of thanks, the Commissioner for Environment, Princess Chinwe Nwebili thanked Governor Obiano for his prompt intervention in waste disposal and management in the state and assured that her Ministry will work assiduously with the ASWAMA to realize his vision for the cleanliness of the state.
On his part, the Managing Director of ASWAMA, Mr Phil Chinwuba said the Agency has also provided trash bags which can be obtained at its offices at Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi adding that the provision of the equipment will help them realize their mandate through prompt evacuation of waste at the various disposal points in the state.
Highpoints was the official commissioning of the equipment by the Governor.
