NANS gives Lagos 7 days ultimatum to address LASU crisis

In the quest to arrest the perennial crisis rocking the Lagos State University, the National Association of Nigerian Students, Zone D South West   has given seven days ultimatum to the Authorities of LASU to address it. “LASU senate and administrative block must be opened by the Lagos State Government within 7 days or face the wrath of our Union.”
Speaking in Lagos, Secretary General, NANS Zone D, South West, Comrade Obanobi Bidemi said: “It is embarrassing for LASU staff unions to barricade all entrance leading to the university and disgraced the   Vice Chancellor, Professor John Obafunwa by pelting him sachet water which drenched him head to toe.”
Academic environment
According to Obanobi, this act by the staff union is dehumanizing, degrading and embarrassing, which should not be thought of in an academic environment. Lamenting the scenario, he noted that ever since, the Vice Chancellor has been sent out of the campus, he is forced to continue the administration from Ikeja satellite campus.
He said: “We want to reiterate the fact that the vice chancellor is not only the vice chancellor of the staff alone, but also the vice chancellor of over 15,001 LASUITES thereby making the students the largest stakeholders in the institution.” In advance institutions, he averred, it is very vague and unheard that because of failure to pay the arrears of staff union, the administrative aspect of citadel must be jeopardize. “If the vice chancellor is sent out of the institution, will that solve the problems of the 31 years old institution, he asked.
Obanobi who vowed to curtail the excesses of the staff union said, hence, the National Association of Nigerian Students will mobilize students from across south west to exhibit the displeasure of LASUITES. Arguing on why the vice chancellor is to immediately return to his office on campus, the Scribe pointed out three salient issues that is of students’ interest.
He said: “It is very important for the university senate to call for an emergency senate meeting to consider the results of the just concluded examination of all LASUITES so as to fast track the process of release of results. “A delay in the consideration of the students result might delay the release result and prolong the academic pursuit of most students on campus.
On postponed convocation, said he: “Lagos state University before Professor Obafunwa became LASU vice chancellor, it always merge convocation of 4 to 5 years together. However, since Obafunwa came, he has held three consecutive convocations. “Those who were admitted in 2011 ought to convocate on 18th of May, 2015, but the convocation was jeopardized by the crisis on campus which will indirectly prolong issuance of certificate of the purported convocants.
Gunshots oncampus
Touching on security, he added: “During our visit to LASU, the ambiance of the school was in disarray with gunshots on campus. This is not the institution of our dream and it occurred because of the vice chancellor’s absence. We demand for adequate security of our members in LASU as their welfare is our concern.”
his words: Our positions is that LASU senate and administrative block must be opened by the Lagos State Government within 7 days. “The administrative activities in LASU must commence in full within the given ultimatum. The state government should swiftly address reasonable demands of the staff union.
“The report of the committee set up by senate on the withdrawn Ph.D should be considered by the senate at their next statutory meeting. The infrastructural projects of LASU campus should continue as we noticed that the crisis has impeded further development on the projects.”
