Anambra FRSC Operation Scorpion on Rampage

www.odogwublog.com reports that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), yesterday, vowed to stop the carnage and crashes caused by articulated vehicles in Anambra in order to stem the tide of death caused by such incidents.


It would be recalled that on May 31, over 68 people death when a tanker laden with petroleum product rammed into a commercial bus park at the Upper Iweka axis of Onitsha; while over 50 persons were hospitalized due to the incident.


The FRSC Assistant Corps Marshal in-charge of Federal Operations, Mrs Mary Wakawa, disclosed this newsmen while launching the 2nd phase of the ``FRSC Operation Scorpion’’ in the outskirt of Onitsha in Anambra.


Wakawa noted that ``Operation Scorpion’’ was carried out for all drivers of articulated vehicles – lorries, trailers, trucks, tankers and low-bed vehicles – to strictly comply with traffic standard in driving such big vehicles.


``In recent past, a lot of Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) have been caused by these articulated vehicles and the nation had lost a lot both in terms of human and finance.


``And we need to check this trend by beaming our searchlight on these articulated vehicles since our country is much depended on road transportation.


``And if we do not, these articulated vehicles crashes would soon cripple our economy and affect the life-style of our people,’’ she said.


The FRSC boss said that the week-long exercise was meant to sensitize, enlightening and advocate to the articulated vehicles drivers to be aware that the road was also meant for other road users.


``We aim to ensure that their loads are properly secured, their vehicles are properly maintained, their construction strong enough and their vehicles road worthy,’’ she said.


She said that the commission would continue to enlighten the various articulated vehicle drivers’ associations and unions; adding: ``Enlightenment and advocacy are the keys to FRSC success’’.


Wakawa maintained that the corps would focus more of its operation in Anambra as its holds two major road corridors; while the issues of articulated vehicle crashes would not be heard about any more in the state.

FRSC mobilized over 100 officers and men; seven vehicles and a tow truck for the operation.


While the Delta FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Rindom Kumven and the Anambra FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Sunday Ajayi, were on hand to see to the success of the operation.
