www.odogwublog.com reports that the Wife of the State Governor, Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano says
the State Government is putting measures in place to eradicate maternal and child health-related problems especially in the rural parts of the State, arising from negligence, ignorance and poverty.                   
 Chief Mrs Obiano stated this during the flag-off of the  2015 Maternal and Child Health week in the State, held at the Primary Health Centre, Ifite-Ogwari in Ayamelum Council Area.                    
The Governor's Wife said issues of maternal and child health have remained top on the agenda of the present administration with Primary Health Centres across the State receiving serious attention in the areas of infrastructural upgrade and provision of health facilities and drugs.                      
   Attributing the prevalence in Maternal and Child Health Mortality in the Council Area to ignorance and poverty, Chief Mrs Obiano revealed that modalities were being worked out to intensify Adult Education Services in the rural parts of the State to equip the Dwellers with the requisite knowledge for improved living.                  
According to her, the Ceremony is critical for the successful implementation of the State Government's well-packaged programme for the week, aimed at reducing the high level but preventable maternal, neonatal and child mortality rate in the area.                            
 She further disclosed that her Caring Family Enhancement Initiative Programme has trained women drawn from Communities in the Health-Disadvantaged areas of the State on Maternal HealthCare Delivery, after which they were provided Tricycles and other Equipment to enable them assist Health Centres in their localities attend to pregnancy emergencies.         
  The trained personnel she noted, will in turn train the rural women on key life-sustaining practices and good nutritional habits.                  
  In a goodwill message, a representative of the World Health Organisation, which is one of the Partners in the project, Dr Willy Onuorah said the Week creates the platform to provide mothers and Children equitable access to a myriad of high impact Survival and Development interventions in a cost-effective manner and urged the State and Local Governments as well as philanthropists to sustain and improve on the programmes of the Week through provision of necessary logistics, supervision and feedback.               
      He further called on stakeholders at the Community level to ensure that the people are mobilized effectively for active participation in the programme towards achieving good health objectives in the State.       
             Earlier, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Josephat Akabuike said the numerous interventions provided during the Week are key measures that have proved to be efficient in preventing Maternal and Infant Mortality, usually caused by shortage of blood, malnutrition, poor infant care, transmission of diseases from mother to child, among other factors.                      
    He commended the Partners supporting the programme in the State, assuring them that despite the dwindling economic fortunes, the State Government will not renege in driving the programme and fashioning out new ways to improve the health condition of Ndi Anambra.
