Rangers’ resurgence gets Akwa test

Is this a dream? When will this fairytale run end? Are they really flying again? What is happening with
Rangers? These are the sort of questions that have dominated the media space in the last couple of weeks following the string of results that Rangers of Enugu have recorded.

Rangers, the club from the east with great soccer tradition that produced the likes of 1980 AFCON winners, Christian Chukwu, Emmanuel Okala and Sylvanus Okpala have been in the news for all the good reasons lately as they have surged to the seventh position, scooping 23 points and six points shy of leaders Sunshine Stars.

When a ranking of Nigerian clubs with great tradition is complied, Rangers will be among the top five, not for what they have achieved in the last decade but because of their feat since the league started in the 1970s.

Despite their illustrious history, Rangers have not been fortunate to enjoy relative success in the last ten years but things seem to changing since Coach Imama Amapakabo took the reins of power at the Coal City side.

Although the management of Rangers has told him to wait till the end of the first round of the ongoing season before considering if he will be elevated to the post of Technical Adviser, there is no doubt that Amapakabo, a former Flying Eagles star has changed the fortunes of Rangers, with rising belief that the Antelopes will fly again and reclaim their pride of place in the nation’s league

Amapakabo proved his capacity to deliver on Wednesday when he tinkered the Flying Antelopes to n hard-fought 2-1 win against champions Kano Pillars at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu. This cam,e just three days after steering Rangers to a stunning 1-0 win over leaders Sunshine Stars. He will aim to make it a treble of wins when he guides Rangers to Uyo to play Akwa United, with high hopes of running away with all three points to keep their fairytale run going.
