Umunze Provost decries attacks on college community in Anambra, wants FG to give N1 Billion take off grant to the college

Attacks on students and staff of Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State have become a regular occurrence.
A source who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed surprise over the ugly trend, adding that students and staff of the institution can no longer sleep without fear of being attacked by hoodlums.
“We are in a big trouble here now. Nobody in this community, including staff and students of this college can now sleep with their two eyes closed,” the source said.
According to him, the Public Relations Officer of the College was shot few days ago by some unidentified gunmen in his residence off campus and his SUV stolen in the process.
The provost of the college, Professor Josephat Ogbuagu confirmed the incident, saying the police were handling the matter accordingly.
Ogbuagu said the college would need about N1bn to be properly repositioned, including accommodating students and staff on campus with maximum security.
“If the N1bn grant would be given to this college, it would assist us to realise the goals I have outlined in the college which include the provision of more buildings, laboratories, workshops and so on,” Ogboagu added.
He regretted that some younger Federal colleges of education had been given about N500m as take-off grants while this school, which was established about three decades, had not received any take-off grants.
He however commended the Federal Government for paying about N100m compensation to natives of the community for their land acquired for the establishment of the institution, maintaining that the step had facilitated the expansion of the college on its permanent site.
The college provost said current students population of the college had risen to over 5,000, noting that the greatest legacy he would want to bequeath the college would be abundance of human infrastructure.
