Lesbianism in Boarding school

NOTHING will ever make me send my children to a boarding school. It is a place where hoodlums, rapist,

lesbians, homosexuals, cults of any kind and other ills begin to take place. Children are being initiated by their fellow students and teachers. Honestly, I prefer my children being close to me than sending them to a boarding school. It will enable me monitor and know when they are going astray or of track. It will also give me the opportunity to correct and train them the way I choose both morally and otherwise”, says Mrs. Tonia Okeke.
One would ask, are all these obtainable in a boarding school? Your answer is as good as mine. People wonder what is so special about been a border while others see it as a taboo or waste of money sending their wards to boarding schools.
Boarding school is a college preparatory institution where students and teachers live and study together in a safe and secure school environment. Many families prefer sending their children to boarding school at an earlier age than and this is a tradition they have kept for so long for generations. However, boarding schools in formal education in Nigeria can be traced to the advent of Christian missionary activities in Nigeria as far back as the early 1840's. It was then used to schedule the converts especially the young ones from the larger society to enable the missionaries inculcate in their young ones Christian values as well as western values and culture. The idea behind this was that, if the school children lived in a mission-controlled environment, it would be easier to indoctrinate and force them to attend school regularly.
Research  shows that boarding schools provide opportunities for students of varying social and economic background to live together and share common problem and interests. It also provides opportunities for students to develop independence and a sense of responsibility; the provision of boarding facilities for students whose parents live very far from school to mention but a few.
Boarding system thus, is a matter of choice for those who can afford the cost. For others they may prefer coming to school from home since they cannot afford it. There have also been speculations on whether the boarding school is really necessary.
“Boarding schools have an outstanding tradition of academic excellence, built on an educational model that delivers diverse curricular, taught by highly qualified and exceptionally motivated teachers, in small classes that encourage meaningful interaction with the students”, says Charles   Okoye, a proprietor, Mind of God Secondary School,Ufuma.
Mr. Okoye disclosed that academics at boarding school operate at high standards. Students are pushed to ask question, become inquisitive, and tackle challenging problems. Learning is not simply about memorizing information and reproducing the information for examinations but rather involves a process of the student's activity discovering new idea and applying it to old information, he said.
He further explained that many boarding schools are encouraged to discover principles for themselves. “This helps to enhance student's curiosity, motivates them to learn more and help develop independent and critical thinking skill. This kind of activities help to produce self-regulated learners, it makes children to understand effective learning strategies and apply them when necessary unlike day schools”.
Mrs. Ifeoma Emuanya, a lecturer, espoused that a child living in boarding, requires a lot of personal responsibility. Boarding school can help a child to mature in character. Children learn things on their own and experience things for themselves and boarding schools provide the perfect environment to learn.
Sharing her experiences, Mrs. Chagorom Okoroji, who was enrolled into boarding school at the age of 11 years, said, “my parents lived close to my school but they decided and agreed that boarding would be the best option for me as a pupil then. At first, I was worried about moving away from home, finding it cliquey, and losing my privacy and even the food quality I used to take, bedtimes, and so on.
“Boarding is like any other school but their learning never stops. We are immersed in an educational environment, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and even when we are outside the classroom, we are still learning important life skills that we will not learn sitting at home in the evenings and at weekends. Some boarding schools are strict while some are not.
But it is never the same with day school. A child will always be engaged with one domestic work or the other. He will not have much time for himself or herself not to talk of reading. Don't you notice that there are much difference between a child that went to boarding house than that of day student…even to participate in extracurricular activities will be dictated by their parents. If they want you will attend, if they don't want you to, you dare not.
It is also a great opportunity to meet with new friends from different background and culture. Many children want to go to boarding for this reason They may love the idea of roaming around school at all hours, having adventures with their friends. This lifestyle is not just fun, though. It develops the child's confidence because they are forced to interact with others constantly and they will be learning to get on with lots of different personalities, which is a useful skill for life.
Comrade Ikedinachukwu Uwakwe, once a boarder said, “One thing I like most about boarding is that it will make you keep off from family tension or stress that may be happening in your home.
There is influx of culture, new things are learnt, old or bad ways of behavior can be changed or influenced with the good ones around. The social lives of pupils in boarding school are different from those in day school. Their etiquette, dress cope, neatness and so on”, he pointed out.
On the contrary, some individual lamented that sending children to boarding school will make them get spoilt or involve in certain ills which by the time you know it, will get out of time.
