Eid-el-fitr: FRSC cautions motorists against over-speeding

www.odogwublog.com reports that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), yesterday, cautioned motorists against over-speeding and managing worn-out tyres during the Eid-el-fitr festivities.

The Nnewi FRSC Unit Commander, Mr Chinaza Ebuta, gave the caution in in an interview in Nnewi on operation ``Safer Roads for All in Sallah’’.

Ebuta noted that hundreds of regular and special marshals of the corps would man all routes in Nnewi and its environs to ensure compliance to traffic regulation.

``The holidays, which is Friday and Monday is sandwiched between Saturday and Sunday; and we are expecting a heavy build-up traffic and many people coming home, so you can see that we must be on top of the situation.

``We also want motorists to cooperate with us by putting their vehicles in order and ensure that their lights and wipers are working since we are in the raining season.

``Motorists should not engage in drunk-driving since the holiday would spread and there would be a lot of social functions,’’ he said.

The commander said that apart from enforcement, the unit would use the holiday to go for some advocacy visits and enlightenment to some motor parks.

Ebuta said that the unit had carried out a partially successful campaign on the use of crash helmets by motorcyclists.

He said that the campaign has been successful since nearly 100 per cent of commercial motorcycle operators in Nnewi and its environs wear crash helmets.

``However, we are having challenge in getting private operators to comply, since from our research each household in Nnewi area have an average of four motorcycles and motorcycle forms 85 per cent of the traffic here.

``We have been going to markets, schools and even worship places to advocate the use of helmets to these teeming numbers of private riders,``he said.

He said that the commission had embarked on advocacy visit to the traditional rulers for them to be part of protecting their people.

``Our talk with major motorcycle importers, manufacturers and second hand dealers on the need to sell their motorcycles with a crash helmet attach always is already progressing,’’ he said
