Police promise to checkmate cultists in Delta

he Police in Delta said on Friday that it would checkmate cult members in the State.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in the state, DSP Celestina Kalu, made the pledge in Asaba.

The statement said the police was not happy with the activities and menace of the cultists hence would nip them in the bud.

It said the police had arrested seven suspected cult members in various locations in Ughelli and Warri in recent times.

"The suspects were arrested with various cult regalia in their possession. The suspects, who confessed their membership of cults, were arrested by operatives of Command's Quick Response Squad (QRS).

"On July 7, 2015 at about 11.30 pm, operatives of QRS, while on visibility patrol along Uti Street, Warri, arrested two suspected cultists - Lucky Umukoro and Emmanuel Ola.

"The two suspects, who have confessed to their membership of Aiye Confraternity, hailed from Ikekweri Otukutu in Ughelli South L.G.A of Delta State’’, it said.

The statement said items recovered from the suspects included one confraternity vest, a bangle and cap with cowries.

"Same date, another QRS team, while on patrol along Warri/Sapele road, arrested three suspected cultists - Ukulor Godwin, Onoriode Tukuru and Friday Okoroko, all residents of Warri.’’

According to the statement, three Aiye confraternity black berets were recovered from the suspects.

Also, on July 8, 2015, QRS operatives in Warri arrested one Okwalogun Michael along Airport road in Warri, in connection with cultism.

"The police recovered one black Aiye confraternity beret from the suspect. QRS operatives in Warri, on July 8, while acting on a tip off, arrested another set of suspected cultists - Ovoh John and Okhotare Tracy.’’
