Court refuses to extend ex-Adamawa governor’s tenure

A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused to extend the tenure of former Adamawa State Governor, James
Ngilari.

The case was dismissed on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, by presiding judge, Justice Evoh Chukwu.

The plaintiff, Umar Ardo‎, sought a declaration from the court that Ngilari’s tenure shouldn't have expired till February 12, 2016.

Chukwu dismissed the suit on the ground that the plaintiff, Ardo‎, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and a three-time governorship aspirant in the state‎, lacked the locus standi to invoke the jurisdiction of the court on the matter.

‎The judge also described the suit as “an affront on the judicial process” and ordered the plaintiff to pay costs of N100, 000 to each of the defendants in the matter.

The defendants in the case were the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and 13 political parties that participated in the April 11 governorship elections in the state.
