3-year-old killed, pregnant mother injured in Delta kerosene explosion

TRAGEDY struck at Ozoro in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State on Tuesday as a three-year-old girl was killed, while her pregnant mother was seriously burnt in a kerosene explosion.

Vanguard gathered that the mother who resides at Urude road area of the metropolis, was refilling a lit lantern with kerosene at about 8pm when the lamp exploded.

Sources said the woman, simply identified as Mrs Uyeri and her daughter who was sitting close were trapped as their apartment went up in flames.

“The shouts of the woman attracted neighbours who immediately ran into the house to rescue her but they did not know that the child was in the apartment.

‘’As she was being taken to the hospital, she was pointing towards the house and it occurred to everyone to check again, only to discover that the child was in the house.

‘’By the time she was taken out of the apartment, she was burnt beyond recognition. That was how she was taken to the General Hospital, Ozoro, where she gave up the ghost,’’ an eyewitness told journalists.

Commenting on the incident, a doctor attached to the hospital, Dr. Chuks Ossai, said the child was 80 per cent burnt at the time she was brought to the hospital.

Blaming the incident on adulterated kerosene, Ossai disclosed that the news of the death of the child had not been broken to the pregnant mother who is receiving treatment in the hospital, saying the woman was responding to treatment.
