South-East Miners Association advocate for coal mining in Enugu, set to partner Federal Government to develop mining in Nigeria

government to develop the nation’s mining industry.


The Association believes that developing the sector will help in the diversification of the nation’s economy, deemphasizing the nation’s crude oil mono economy, and adding impetus to President Muhammadu Buhari’s blueprint on mining and agriculture.

The second national vice president of the association in charge of southern Nigeria, Dr. Kanayo Enemuo gave the indication during a maiden stakeholders south east zonal meeting of the association with the officials of the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel development in Awka.

Dr. Enemuo urged President Buhari to translate his vision into action to boost the nation’s economy through employment creation.

The one time speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly and former Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources in the state advocated the revival of the coal industry in Enugu to generate enough power supply to serve the south east geopolitical zone, as well as the checking of the activities of illegal Miners undermining the nation’s economic base.

He said the association will soon embark on a tour of the south east states to discuss with the governors of the states on how to tap the mineral deposits in their states.

Dr. Enemuo commended Governor Willy Obiano further for effectively harnessing the mineral deposit in the state and further called on the federal government to ensure peace and order by checking the activities of the people from Kogi State who attack their brothers in Aguleri –Otu where crude oil is located.

Others who spoke during the meeting calling for the development of the Mining Industry in Nigeria include the Anambra State Chairman of the Miners Association, Chief Henry Igboeli, his Imo State counterpart Pastor Chuks Oriaku, his Ebonyi State counterpart, Mr. Monday Okoro, and his Abia counterpart, Elder Victor Ndubuisi.


On his part, the chairman in charge of developing the solid mineral development blue print for the south east geopolitical zone, Mr. Chris Mary Ukachukwu said the agenda of the committee is to let the governments of the states, realize the potentials of developing the mineral deposits industry and adding value to the raw material existing in their domain to create job opportunities for the unemployed.

Mr. Ukachukwu listed some of the mineral deposits in the zone to include kaolin in Anambra and Abia States, limestone and lead in Ebonyi State, coal in Enugu State, Gold in Abia and suspected Gold in Imo State.

The representative of the south east zonal coordinator Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development Awka, Mr. Idris Okundeji expressed hope that the over forty solid minerals in Nigeria will be developed to diversify the nation’s economy under the Buhari administration.
