Police, Commercial Motorbike Operators Clash In Onitsha----as police impound 50 motorbikes/Tricycles

www.odogwublog.com reports that tension is high in Onitsha, Anambra state as Police and the commercial
motorbikes operators clashed yesterday. The police impounded about 50 motorcycles but released them to their owners later.

This is the fallout of the commencement of enforcement of the ban on commercial motorbikes/tricycles operators in some restricted roads in Anambra State.
At Awka, the operators had done what could be termed s protest , moving their motorcycles in and around the restricted areas along the expressway by Aroma without carrying anybody.

On trying to enforce the ban, the commercial bike operators see the action of the police as bid to stop them from means of having their daily bread.
As the Police impounded quite a number of the bikes, the owners regrouped with other members to retrieve the bikes from the police at Oguta Road, Onitsha although the police repelled them.
On the process of trying to attack and retrieve the impounded bikes, the police started shooting into the air which scared them.
The police team, led by the Central Divisional Police Office, DPO, Mr. Isa Abubakar, however, released the impounded bikes to them but advised them to keep to the ban order.

Abubakar said the exercise yesterday was to create awareness on the need not to ply on the restricted areas.

He added that three of the bikes earlier impounded would be handed over to ‘Taskforce on Willie is Working’ today, for necessary action.
It would be recalled that the state government had about two weeks ago banned tricycles/motorbikes from operating in some restricted roads in the state but was yet to effect the ban order until yesterday when some Police divisions embarked on the enforcement.
