Obiano to commission Rojenny International Stadium tartan tracks, as over 800 athletes, students to compete in athletics golden league in Anambra
www.odogwublog.com reports that Governor Willie Obiano of
Anambra state will on Thursday inaugurate
the world class tartan tracks at
Rojenny International stadium Oba, Idemmili South local government area.
This is coming as no fewer than 800 athletes including 400
students from about 64 secondary schools in Anambra would compete in the first
AFN/Anambra Golden League (Athletics) competition scheduled for June 10 and 11.
Tony Nnacheta, Commissioner of Ministry of Youths and Sports
in the state said this at a press conference held at the Rojenny Games Village,
Oba on Sunday.
Nnacheta also said that the golden league which would serve
as discovery ground for athletes for higher competition would be preceded by
the commissioning of the "new Olympic standard Tartan Tracks".
He the tartan tracks which is valued at N80 million was an
8-lane IAAF certified facility with 10 year warranty, adding that the
competition would feature 20 events.
Nnacheta urged all stakeholders including schools, parents
and the media to embrace the programme and ensure it succeeded.
Also speaking, Kate Omenugha Commissioner for Education said
her ministry would mobilise students for event in spite of the fact that it
fell on mid term break.
Omenugha said a lot were being done by the government to
upgrade sporting facilties in the
state's schools as sports were integral part of the education policy in
Anambra.
She called on wealthy Anambra people and old boys and girls
associations to adopt schools nearest to them and see the way they can
intervene in the provision of sports facilities.
Rommy Ezeonwuka, Managing Director of Rojenny stadium where
the tartan tracks was laid said he happy that the opportunities in the stadium
was being exploited.
