PRESIDENT, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mallam Muhammed Garba has reiterated the need for the
passage of the Media Enhancement Bill.
Mallam Garba spoke to Newsmen in Lagos on the issue of some private media houses who owed salaries of workers for several months.
According to him, the passage of the bill would tackle the problem of non-payment of salaries by media houses and give appropriate punishment to defaulters.
Mallam Garba said that the Union would look into the issues in the bill and ensure that when the 8th National Assemble would ensure its passage.
`There must be a law to ensure that media houses pay salaries to their workers. Though strike is a good weapon but it does not last because of high rate of unemployment.
``In 2014, some media houses that owed seven months and above one year salary were picketed, but immediately they paid two months out of the arrears, workers went back to work. They had to return to work because of economic condition and problem of no job,'' he said.
Mallam Garba described the situation as unfortunate and called for support for journalists to ensure that they do their job diligently.
