TRAINING of children must entail socialization and education involving moral and academic education,
interaction with good peer-groups, contact with media, the religious, teachers in the schools and the government. If a human baby is taken away at birth from the mother and raised in complete isolation, such individual would lack essential attributes of human being. Thus it is the act of living together that makes man a real man as he interacts with his fellow human being. Therefore the process of making an individual fit in and play his part in society is the function of education and socialization.
Education is described as the process of influencing the young and inexperienced so that they become worthy human beings and citizens while socialization is the process by which young people acquire the already existing culture of the groups With which they are associated. Education and socialization are related and thus necessary ingredients for training of our children.
Family include parents and other members of the family whether nuclear or extended family. It is the parents that lead the way in training children to develop the different types of acceptable behaviour in any society. The mother, father, and all other members of the family must take active part in children upbringing. Moral training, discipline and academic training financially and otherwise are the primary responsibilities of the parents. The family as a teacher provides the first educational experiences of the children. These experiences begin in the infancy with the first attempt to direct, guide and train the child. For the child to get those good expectations of the family, there has to be that constant and regular interaction between the child and the biological parents.
Entering school is the first step away from the family into the outside world. Here the child interact with the school environment, the peers and all categories of teachers. The teachers play the role of parents. All the schools in Nigeria public or private of all levels must inculcate moral, discipline and academic training for all the students.
In the process, our youths would secure the development of personality and become worthy human beings that would be useful to the society which will be free from insurgency and all should move towards building a united Nation. All religious sects in Nigeria should continue to preach moral instructions so as to mould good character for our youths. If there is any religious sect that is not involve in moral preaching or Raying lip-service to that, this is the time for the right thing.
Hence Nigeria is now battling with multiple problems of insurgency, political upheaval and indiscipline, thuggery, rapping, Kidnapping and other numerous social ills. Moral and religious instructions should be a core subject right from nursery school through, primary to secondary school level. Adequate control measures against cultism must be adopted in all schools. The government, school authority, parent and security agents should work as a team to, ensure eradication of secret cult in our school system. Various religious sects in course of their teaching should emphasize responsibilities and those ideals that will help the child, modify his behaviour and fashion out acceptable good character. The government and various religious should be actively involved in running of the schools financially, academically, morally and otherwise.
The building of schools, payment of teachers' salaries and provision of security in schools against secret cult should be the primary responsibility of the government. It is necessary that the government and various religious sects should introduce moral and religious instructions as core subject in all pre-primary, primary and post- primary schools across the country. This will help to ensure discipline and bring about good moral behavior among our youths and future generations. In fact religious instructions should be made a compulsory subject in all schools starting from nursery through primary to secondary school levels. It is the duty of the government and the various religious sects to introduce this and ensure its proper implementations. It is recalled that before the Nigeria-Biafran civil war, the early missionaries that came to Nigeria brought along with them education and Christianity. Moral instructions and discipline were invoked at that period but today it had gone moribund. How and when do we revive moral in our school system and our society as a whole? This is the time, no time is too late. Let the government and different religious introduce moral into the school system. This will serve as one of the grass-root avenues to control insurgency now prevalent in our society today. Therefore the team works of the parents in various families, teachers in various institutions, different religious sects, mass media and government, are urgently needed to train our youths to become worthy and useful human beings for a better society that will build United Nations.
