www.odogwublog.com reports that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has called on women in
Nigeria to play a more effective role in ensuring that the roads in the country are safe.
Sector Commander, Anambra state FRSC, Mr Sunday Ajayi made the call while addressing women of the Redeemed Christian Church at their national convention in Awka.
Ajayi said the role of women was important as they were the mothers, wives and crucial member so the society who wielded a lot of influence on most road users.
He appealed to them as road users to ensure that their vehicles were in good mechanical condition before hitting the roads as most crashes were due to human negligence.
He said they should not be too excited as to make their children begin to drive before the minimum age of 18 years, saying that such show of love could be deadly.
Ajayi pointed out that women who were arrested for obvious traffic violation instead of appreciating their offense would rather appeal to the emotion of officers as being the weaker vessels.
“Recently we have been experiencing crashes and people die every day on our roads, the drivers of these people are either husbands, brothers or children, so women are very important in this safety business.
“Women also drive but most of you do not give attention to your vehicles to ensure they are in good condition before going out, just as you will take care of yourself, makeup and look good before going out.
“Some of you are blessed you want your children to drive early and you make them to handle your vehicle and endanger the family even when they are less than the recommended 18 years, it can bring grief to a family.
“While we pray to God, we also have a role to play by being obedient to the rules of traffic, no phone calls while driving, infants should seat at the back, observe the weather and ensure you are in good state of health.
“The reward to safe driving is getting to your destination and we want our women to be happy with complete members of the family, so you must join in this advocacy for safety on our roads,” he said.
The corps commander urged the women to avoid patronizing touts while trying to obtain new or renew their driver’s license as the process had been made easy by the FRSC.
