FRSC Boss from Benin Mr Crawford Oti cautions media against unconfirmed figures, says 45 died in tanker inferno and not 70 as publicized

www.odogwublog.com reports that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), RS5, Benin Zonal
Command has called on petroleum tanker drivers in the country to be more careful while on the highways to curb the spate of crashes associated with them.
Mr Crawford Oti, acting Commander of the zone made the appeal in Awka on Wednesday.
Oti who led the regular and special marshals in the command on symbolic one-minute silence in honour of the departed souls in the Onitsha tragedy, described the accident as colossal and unfortunate.
He cautioned motorists to be more cautious and see the FRSC as partners in the safe traffic business, adding that "our lives are in our own hands".
On the figures suggested so far as the number of victims in the Onitsha carnage, Oti urged the media to more investigative and ensure that their reports are fact based and less sensational.
The zonal commander said the number of deaths from the crash was 46 and not 70 as widely publicized, urging them to make efforts to get the facts and not be carried away by emotions.
"Our appeal is that the media should be more investigative, I have come see for myself what is happening in this command and the report shows 45 persons died initially and one person died at the hospital, you can see this is not what the people are being told even up to this morning," he said.
He lauded the officers in the Anambra command and urged them not to rest in their oars as discipline and consistency were part of the culture of the FRSC.
In his remark, Mr Sunday Ajayi, Sector Commander in the state said the command was healthy and effective.
Ajayi said said his management had set up a good reward and punishment mechanism as a motivation system to spur the officers to greater productivity.
