LEADER of Aguata Local Government
Legislative Council, Wilson Ugochukwu Onyekwelu has stated that
ensuring
environmental healthiness and positive erosion control measures for sustainable
development are achievable if concerted efforts are made by both government,
market men and women and communities at large.
Speaking at Umuchiana-Umuchi Ekwulobia gully
erosion site, during an oversight function of Aguata Legislative Council
members, Hon. Onyekwelu revealed that the sightseeing became eminent following
a motion moved by Hon George Okoli, representing Ekwulobia ward one in the
council on the devastating nature of the gully erosion site which needs
government urgent attention.
Hon Onyekwelu further recalled that Anambra state Government together
with other donor agencies has done so much over the years at this gully erosion
site to reduce its continued insidious effect.
The House Leader assured the
people that he and his team will appropriately report back the situation on
ground to the relevant authorities for assistance- so as to aid the people in
sleeping with their two eyes closed throughout the rainy season.
In their separate speeches, the Chairmen of the two villages, Nze Godwin
Chukwuemeka, Chairman of Umuchiana People's Congess and Nze Anselem Ezenwankwo,
Chairman of Umuchi village, both expressed satisfaction over the concern of the
present Aguata Local Government House members on environmental and health
challenges of the people as a result of erosion crisis.
They both recounted in details, various threats and dangers the erosion
menance has caused the people raging from claiming of various houses,
farmlands, livestocks and major roads.
Mrs. Esther Asiegbu, one of the women living around the erosion the
erosion site narrated their ugly experience from the erosion menace confessing
that many of the villagers have been rendered homeless in the past; several
others became refugees in their own town as many buildings had collapsed in the
area.
She stated further that road users were once in a difficult situation as
the major road linking Ekwulobia and Oko was once disconnected by the gully
erosion making it so difficult to access the Federal Polytechnic and other
institutions across the road
In a vote of thanks, Hon George
Okoli, Councillor representing Ekwulobia 1, thanked the house leader and entire
members of Aguata Legislative Council for coming out-enmase to see for
themselves the situation of things on ground.
He commended the Umuowelle-Umuchi Community for their Community efforts
in helping to control the heavy flood from neighbouring communities within
Aguata LGA noting that he has personally donated some bags of cement to the
people to see that their efforts were being complemented and the work
progressive.
