Tension as Man, 32, dies mysteriously in Anambra SARS office Nnewi

A 32-year old man, Amarachukwu Agbasi, has died after being released from the custody of State Anti
Robbery Squad (SARS) in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The family of the deceased has petitioned the commissioner of police, Hosea Karma, to investigate the death of their son.
The late Agbasi, from Nzagha Village, Ukpor in Nnewi South, died after he was allegedly tortured by SARS officials on December 9, 2014.
The petition titled “The tragic death of Amarachukwu Agbasi caused by the torture by the men of the Special Anti Robbery squad (SARS) in Nnewi” reads:
“It is the ordeal of our client that his son, Amarachukwu Agbasi, in the employ of MAC PETERS, was sent to buy a motorcycle at Nnewi on November 27, 2014.  As at the following day, Amarachukwu Agbasi was yet to return home. This was reported to his master, MAC PETERS who could not account for Amarachukwu’s whereabouts.
“Reports were made at the Central Police Station and at the Area Command Headquarters, Nnewi, but Amarachukwu was not there and no useful information about his whereabout was got. Later same day, the SARS office at Nnewi was visited and it was discovered that Amarachukwu was detained in their cell.
“The officer-in-charge told the people that came for Amarachukwu to come back on Saturday, November 29, 2014. When they got there, Amarachukwu was released on bail.
“His body was bruised and he looked like a half-dead. From the day he was released, he was carried from one hospital to another and on December 9, 2014, he started vomiting blood and later died.
“The death of Amarachukwu was reported in the SARS office and to the Area Command Headquarters, Nnewi. His body has been deposited at the Cilex mortuary, Agbuani Ukpor.
“As at the time of writing this petition, Amarachukwu’s motorcycle and some of his personal items were still with the men of SARS at Nnewi.
“On behalf of our client, we appeal to you to use your office to investigate the death of Amarachukwu”.
When contacted yesterday, police spokesman, Mr. Uche Ezeh said he was not aware of the petition. He said the command would look for the petition and act appropriately.
