Owners Welfare Association of Nigeria, OAWAN and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria RTEAN, in a bid to help Governor Willie Obiano flush out criminals in the State, weekend sank their differences and united.
The event which took place along the ever busy Onitsha/Owerri road, opposite the Obosi general Motorpark, was performed during the official commissioning of RTEAN office.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon Chuma Mbonu stressed the need for all hands to be on deck to help improve on the transport sector as government alone could not do it.
The Commissioner who was represented by Hon Nwabueze Onwudionu, expressed optimism that with the unity of the two groups, crimes that include touting, illegal levies/taxes and other criminal activities would be completely flushed out in the transport sector in the state.
Earlier in his address, the state Chairman of RTEAN, and chairman Board of trustees, Chief Kingsly Maduagwuna assured the members that the unity would sanitize the transport sector stressing, "it will no longer be as usual, touting has changed , some of the members are graduates”
The merger will help curtail illegal tickets, emblems and touting in the states”, he stated
He urged non members to now join OAWAN, RTEAN in their own interest as both were the only recognized autobike unions in the State.
Also speaking, the AOWAN chairman, Board of Trustees, Dr. Jimmy Okonkwo said, “today we have become one for peace to reign”
He urged others in the autobike transport sector to emulate OAWAN/RTEAN as a way of moving the State forward.
The OAWAN BOT Chairman reiterated the resolve of the duo bodies to sanitize the state with the collaboration of the State government.
Contributing, the RTEAN chairman Awka South and State Chairman tricycle unit, Prince Chinedu Ekwunife Anyafulugo revealed that the partnership of AOWAN/RTEAN would spur them to eradicate all forms of criminality in the autobike transport sector.
He described the union of both groups as a good omen for the state government as they would ensure that unapproved bodies would not be allowed to ferment trouble in the State.
In their various remarks the RTEAN chairman board of Trustees, Chief Gilbert Obi described the coming together of the duo groups as one of the good things that have happened to the state adding that sanity and decorum would be installed.
Also the Public Relation Officer, PRO of RTEAN, Mr. Chukwuka Nwosu, commended the State government stating that they would abide by their oath of office.
