author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, paid N50 Million naira to secure his release with his driver, police sources said although unverified.
Prof Adichie was abducted by unknown persons from his home in the University of Nigeria town of Nsukka last Saturday May 2, 2015.
Adichie, 83, who is said to be the first Professor of Statistics in Nigeria, was taken away by the kidnappers who later demanded for $250,000 ransom equivalent of N50 Million from his family. He was taken with his driver.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 10am while Professor Adichie was travelling from Nsukka to his hometown Abba but he has regained his freedom. The bestselling author’s father was reportedly released at about 8pm on Tuesday, May 5.
Enugu state police spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the abduction of the university don when contacted , said that the command was on the matter since Saturday.
He said that details of the release of the professor were being expected from Nsukka Area Command, promising to issue statement on the issue later.
The family of the professor could not be reached to ascertain if the demanded ransom was paid before he was released.
Though the award winning author Ngozi and other family members especially the wife were traumatized by that as it happened when it was least expected.
