Hoodlums terrorize teachers, students inside fenceless Anambra school



Teachers and students of Community Secondary School, CSS, Uke, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State are now groaning following the state of
insecurity in the institution. Hoodlums terrorize the staff and students inside their porous and unfenced school compound.
Principal of the school, Hyacinth Mbah who spoke, during the commissioning ceremony of some newly renovated school blocks and staff quarters, said as a result of the porosity of the school, bag snatchers and other criminals were having a field day inside the premises, throwing the teachers into panic.
According to him, apart from the menace of the hoodlums, cattle rearers and their animals usually invade the school premises destroying most things at will, without any obstruction. He said that school property like laptops and science equipment, among others worth millions of Naira had been evacuated to other safe places for fear of being stolen by the hoodlums.
Mbah therefore called on the appropriate government agencies to team up with town union leaders in the host community with a view to commencing the erection of a perimeter fence round the school premises. He also, called for the renovation of the old school staff quarters, dormitories, dinning hall, kitchen facilities and possibly put up new ones for the proposed restoration of the school boarding system to become a reality.
He however commended the state government for caring for the school and called for more assistance in the area of the perimeter fencing to ensure security of lives and property.
The principal further called for the sinking of a borehole and toilet facilities to ensure maintenance of good and healthy environment adding that a giant power generating plant for computer studies and a school library had been provided, courtesy of Drs Boniface Agbala and Eddy Emegoakor, two prominent indigenes of the community.
Commissioning the newly renovated school blocks, the Chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Chief Nzemeka Olisa said that the board has so far spent about N20 million for the renovation of school blocks in the school, adding that the project was part of the state government’s efforts aimed at transforming the state school system.
He however urged host communities and individuals to assist the state government by contributing towards making their various schools citadel of learning. Also in her own speech while commissioning a newly completed ultra-modern staff quarters built by the President-General of Uke Town Union, Chukwuemeka Enendu, the Chairman of the state Post Primary Schools Services Commission, PPSSC, Lady Joy Ulasi pledged to give the school more teachers at the completion of the on-going rationalization exercise of teachers in the state.
Ulasi who expressed satisfaction that the school has grown from strength to strength in terms of number of students, described education as a partnership venture between the government and host communities.
