The Nigeria Governors’ Forum under the leadership of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of
Rivers State has congratulated the President Elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), saying God gave the retired soldier to the country.
It also hailed Buhari’s main opponent and challenger, President Goodluck Jonathan for quickly conceding defeat.
The former head of state, who was the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, defeated President Jonathan, who was the candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
The Independent National Electoral Commission pronounced Buhari the winner of the March 28 presidential election with a vote of 15,405,928 while Jonathan secured 12,663.950.
Congratulating Buhari, the NGF in a statement issued by its Director General Mr. Asishana Okauru, also congratulated all the political parties that took part in the election.
He said having contested the position three times without success, God thought the time had come for Buhari to lead the country now.
The statement said, “We at the Nigeria Governors’ congratulate the APC for the emergence of Buhari, at the March 28, Presidential election as President-elect, and Prof. Yemi Osibajo, as Vice President-elect.
“We also congratulate the APC, PDP and all other political parties for the success of their various candidates in the National Assembly elections.
“The emergence of Buhari at this point in Nigeria’s political history, is nothing but the will of the people and God, considering the fact that he had previously contested the seat three times.
“We thank President Jonathan for his concession of victory. This is the mark of true sportsmanship. We call on all other political party leaders to follow suit.”
He said the NGF look forward to a successful conduct of the forthcoming Governorship and State Assembly elections on April 11, 2015.
Okauru said the task ahead of the incoming administration is enormous.
He however prayed to God to use “Buhari as President working with all stakeholders, to lead the country across party, religious, ethnic and sectoral lines.
“This is the level of cohesion needed to meet the yearning expectations of all Nigerians and move our country forward.” .
