EU-Sign Project Launched in Anambra...As the State benefits from European Union 12.21 billion programme
www.odogwublog.com reports that the EU-Sign Project has been launched in Anambra
state by the team leader of the European Union-Sign Project, Dr. Goli Lamiri.
Dr. Goli Lamiri who was represented by Mrs Cathrine Uzoma revealed that Anambra State is one of the 23 states in Nigeria benefitting from Euro 12.21billion grant over a four year period to boost immunization.
He said the
fund will be used for project management, facilitation of state and local
government management systems and stewardship of Primary Health Care in
designing operational strategies to improve the structural challenges that
affect the efficacy of routine immunization activities.
According to him, the fund will also assist in information processing, monitoring and reporting, coordination with stake holders and other donors including the establishment and strengthening of health care development agencies, even as he added that the fund is aimed at improving delivery or routine immunization services by expanding the reach of the vaccine cold chain system and transportation.
“It will also improve service delivery and integrating routine immunization into Polio Eradication Activities, improve governance, stewardship and management systems through supporting implementation of the Primary Health Care under One Roof policy at state level and improve information and knowledge generation to routine immunization which aims at driving policies and innovation for programme implementation, among other things” Lamiri said.
In a presentation made by Anambra State Immunization officer, Mrs. Florence Anene, problems confronting attainment of 100 immunization coverage include inadequate cool chains in the state, lack of correct data on immunization activities among others.
Mrs. Anene said that Immunization coverage has gone from 80 percent in January to 79 percent in February and 76 percent in March, pointing out that lack of accurate data may be part of the problems.
She however noted that for the seventh year running, Anambra has not recorded any incidence of polio.
Nevertheless, the state Commissioner for Health Dr. Joe Akabuike who represented Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State at the launch noted that a lot has been done to ensure that the health care system is improved in the state.
Akabuike said that the state government plans to procure 196 solar powered refrigerators for distribution to the local governments, and has already procured six boat ambulances and 17 flying boats used in the river-rine areas which are usually hard-to-reach.
He said he wants to use private-management approach in running the health care system whereby less is spent on infrastructure and more on manpower.
