www.odogwublog.com reports that
at last the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on Tuesday
opened up on
whether he is leading other top senators from South East from PDP to APC over
senate presidentship.
Ekweremadu declared that prominent Igbo politicians in the Peoples Democratic
Party will not defect to the All Progressives Congress, despite General
Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in the Presidential election.
Buhari’s victory over the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan meant
that the ruling PDP will become an opposition party in the next
administration.
The development has given rise to speculations that prominent PDP
members, particularly in the South-East, will decamp to the APC.
Ekweremadu, however, restated the commitment of Ndigbo to the PDP while
addressing stakeholders from Enugu West Senatorial District in Enugu.
He noted that by becoming an opposition party, the PDP would be further
strengthened in the South-East.
The Senator, who was re-elected for a fourth term in the March 28
Presidential and National Assembly polls, stressed that the South-East was the
true home of the PDP.
He pointed to massive votes recorded by the party in the March 28
elections in the zone to justify his claim.
He said, “I have heard a lot of speculations on the possible mass
defection of Ndigbo to the APC in the coming dispensation.
“While I will not hold brief for all the PDP stalwarts of South-East
origin, especially because our constitution provides for freedom of
association, I can assure you that on PDP we stand.
“At least, count Senator Ike Ekweremadu out of any defection to the
opposition.
“PDP leaders in the South-East are committed to further repositioning
and strengthening the party.
“We may not have the presidency, but we are strong in the states and
remain the party to beat.
“On PDP we stand.”
While congratulating Jonathan for conceding defeat in a heroic manner,
and Buhari, for his hard won victory, the Deputy Senate President expressed
gratitude to the people of Enugu West, Enugu State and South-East in general
for coming out in large numbers to vote for the PDP in the March 28 polls, and
urged them to repeat the feat on April 11, during the governorship and state
assembly elections.
Ekweremadu finally opened up on his defection with other top ranking Ndigbo PDP to APC
